About the baker

Meet Melissa, the baker behind the crust

Hi! I'm Melissa, the baker and owner behind The Pixie Crust Company.

When I turned 45, I figured I had three options: raise chickens, buy a ridiculous number of plants, or start making sourdough — because apparently that's what you do in your mid-40s. I don't like chickens, and I can't keep plants alive. So, sourdough it was.

After finally baking my first successful loaf, I started sharing bread with family and friends. Before long, people began asking, “How can I buy this from you?” I didn't exactly have an answer, because starting a bakery had never been part of the plan.

Then, on Small Business Saturday, I saw a local post inviting people to share their small businesses. I decided to take a chance and posted that I had sourdough bread for sale. And somehow, that little leap turned into The Pixie Crust Company.

What started with one successful loaf has become something I'm incredibly proud of — and incredibly grateful for.

Thanks to word of mouth, people sharing my posts, and an incredible community of customers, the business grew faster than I ever imagined. I kept looking for new opportunities, saying yes to farmers markets and local partnerships, and adding new creations along the way.

These days, I joke that I have two full-time jobs. By day, I'm a Pre-K teacher. The rest of the time, you can usually find me covered in flour, mixing dough, shaping loaves, baking cookies, or trying to figure out how I can possibly fit just one more batch into the week.

So, why “The Pixie Crust Company”?

When it came time to name this unexpected little business, I knew it had to include another big part of who we are: my family's love of Disney. With a little help from Doug (my ChatGPT bestie!), I tossed around ideas until The Pixie Crust Company came along — and it just felt like the one. The name combines a little bit of Disney magic with what started it all: a really good crust.

And if I'm not teaching or covered in flour in the bakery, there's a pretty good chance you'll know exactly where to find me — walking down Main Street, U.S.A. in Magic Kingdom.

Thank you to every person who has bought a loaf, placed an order, visited me at a market, told a friend, shared a post, or simply cheered me on along the way. You're the reason my little midlife sourdough experiment became The Pixie Crust Company.

And for the record, I still don't own any chickens.
